These days Proenza Schouler can do no wrong as far as people here in NY are concerned. Two cute boys who wooed Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors before they even graduated from Parsons, and who sold their entire thesis collection to Barney`s New York? And who named their fashion house after their mothers? It`s a fairytale.
The trouble is, everyone`s too busy glowing in the light of their “new generation” fashion, and pinching their cheeks to be seriously critical of anything they make. With the PS2 (2011 Resort collection) in hideous mustard yellow crocodile suede I`m bursting the bubble. It`s terrible and it will disappear when the dream (illusion) is over.
Before the mindless lauding of everything Proenza Schouler in this city infects the rest of the world, someone has to say something. After all, the ones who lose the most from the lack of negative criticism are designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. It dilutes their successes and the more they get away with bad styles like this one the more they`re going ¬ to screw up in the future. (Believe me, I`ve seen them at a few parties…they`re still easily swayed by praise).
